I recently attended an Eagles‘ concert, so I’ve been pulling out all my Eagles’ CDs (yes, I still have CDs) and listening to them again this week. There’s a song on their “Long Road Out of Eden” album about a relationship that’s in trouble due to distracted and misplaced priorities. The song is called “Busy Being Fabulous” and here are a few of the lyrics:
And I found your little note
‘Don’t wait up for me tonight’
And that was all she wrote
With all of your high-rollin’ friends?
What do you do when you come up empty?
Where do you go when the party ends?
Too busy to think about us
I don’t know what you were dreamin’ of
Somehow you forgot about love
And you were just too busy being fabulous, uh huh
And money’s just a thrill
I’ve waited so long for you to change your way of livin’
Now I realize that you never will
Too busy to think about us
Lookin’ for somethin’ you’ll never find
Never know what you left behind
‘Cause you were just too busy being fabulous, uh huh
The song is describing someone who is so into chasing thrills, attending parties, and being seen that she is not paying attention to the more important things of life; consequently this person is losing a relationship she supposedly values. In trying to be fabulous, this person is sabotaging the very thing that makes life fabulous in the first place: love.
But how many of us are guilty of the same thing?
How many of us are sabotaging the most fabulous truth about us – that we are the beloved of God – because we are too busy being fabulous in the world’s eyes?
Jesus once asked, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” In other words, what good is it to be fabulous in the world’s eyes if the cost is separation from God?
God thinks you’re so fabulous that he gave his Son for you (John 3:16).
So, quit trying to prove to yourself and others that you are worthy. God has already deemed you worthy.
Or are so busy being fabulous that you forgot that?
