Breaking News (A Prayer)

As I was watching TV last night, a bold graphic accompanied by distinctive music interrupted the show that was playing and declared, “Breaking News.”

It was breaking news about a broken world.

Russia has invaded Ukraine.

And now, there is another war in the world.

There is more violence in the world.

There is more power being abused.

There are more lives being destroyed.

There is another assault on peace.

Breaking news.

A world that is broken.

Lord, we are desperate for the “breaking in” of your Kingdom.

For the “breaking in” of your grace.

For the “breaking in” of your mercy.

For the “breaking in” of your love.

Lord, we are desperate for the “breaking news” of the Gospel.

Your gospel of a risen Savior who will make right all that has gone wrong.

Your gospel of a benevolent Power that will heal the abuses of power.

Your gospel of a Kingdom that will overcome and outlast all worldly empires.

This is the news that we long to hear.

We long to hear the breaking news that war is over…

That hate has been conquered by love…

That violence has been overtaken by mercy…

That conflict has been swallowed up by peace…

That your will is being done on earth as it is in heaven.

This is our prayer for peace.

Lord, hear our prayer.
