The Second Mountain

On a recent trip to Alaska, my daughter took the following picture…

…and it reminded me of David Brooks’ book The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life.

In the book, Brooks speaks of two “mountains.” The first mountain is success, as our society typically defines it, and the second mountain is significance. Brooks writes, “The second mountain is a more satisfying journey because its ultimate aim is not success but a life of greater depth and significance.”

Don’t settle for success; pursue significance.
