On Sunday, I continued my sermon series about work and focused on the opportunities we have in our places of work to be on mission for God. At the end of the sermon, I gave everyone some “homework” that will help us approach work with a more missional mindset…
- Write a “workday startup prayer” that you will pray at the beginning of your workday. Here’s a sample one: “Lord, thank you for the ability and opportunity to work. Through your Spirit, help me to see my work as a ministry and do my work in a way that brings you glory and honor. Open my eyes to the opportunities to make Jesus known to others at work and through my work. Help me to be positive and productive today. May I be a problem-solver and a source of joy and blessing to the people around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
- Write a “workday shutdown prayer” that you will pray as you end your workday, similar to the prayer above.
- As you prepare for the week (or day) ahead, set a timer for 5 minutes and in those 5 minutes make a list of all the missional opportunities you have at work for that week (or day).
- Read Jeremiah 29:4-7, 10-14 three times in the context of work – on the way to work, at work, and on the way home from work. As you reflect on this reading, ask yourself how you are applying these verses in your work.
Work is an arena where each of us can demonstrate our allegiance to God the Father and King Jesus. Let’s make the most of it!
