What Do You Like Best About Being in a Position of Leadership?

The title of this blog post is a question I ask every new coaching client of mine. It’s one of several questions I ask during an introductory session that helps me get to know each person a little better.

When I recently asked this question to a new client of mine, she said that what she likes best about being in a position of leadership is having a voice to speak up on behalf of “employees in the field.”

I love this answer!

As soon as she said it, I thought of Esther 10:3, which describes how and why Mordecai was an effective leader: “Mordecai the Jew was second in rank to King Xerxes, preeminent among the Jews, and held in high esteem by his many fellow Jews, because he worked for the good of his people and spoke up for the welfare of all the Jews.”

“…he worked for the good of his people and spoke up for the welfare of all the Jews.”

This is the role and responsibility of the leader.

It should also be the focus of a leader.

So, whatever position you’re in, you will be an influential and inspirational leader if you (1) work for the good of the people you serve; and (2) speak up for the welfare of others.

You will also enjoy it – because leadership is more fun when it’s not about self.

In fact, like my new client, it will probably become your favorite part of being in leadership.
