Looking Silly

Have you ever done something that made you look silly?

The other day I was working from home and had a morning stacked with virtual meetings.

But, just before my first meeting was set to start, I remembered that it was trash day. So I ran downstairs – in my dress shirt, sweat pants, and slippers – to take out the trash. Just as I was putting the trash can in the driveway, my next-door neighbor was leaving for work and caught me.

There I was in my mismatched clothes – looking silly – and all I could do was smile and wave.

We both had a good laugh.

Someone once said, “Unless you’re ready to look foolish, you’ll never have the possibility of being great.”

In other words, unless you’re willing to take risks, fail, or do things that, in the moment, don’t make sense to others, you won’t accomplish your goals.

Or be an effective leader.

Being a leader requires one to chart a course, set a tone, and make a plan for others to follow; and, at different stages in the process, others may think you’re crazy – because they can’t see what you see yet.

You may even look silly.

But that’s o.k.

Keep believing.

Keep working.

Keep moving in the direction of your goals.

Keep casting the vision.

It will eventually make sense.
