In Genesis 15, as God is making his covenant with Abram/Abraham, God says to him, “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield…” (v. 1).
I love that line.
“Fear not, Abram, I am your shield…”
Ever since then, as evidenced by Scripture, people have described God accordingly.
This is also how I have experienced God.
In my life, God, as my shield, has protected me…
From Satan’s attacks.
From the harm that others have sought to do to me.
From my own pride.
From my own selfishness.
From my inadequate wisdom.
From making poor decisions.
Don’t get me wrong, I have suffered.
I have experienced pain.
I have been hurt by others.
I have faced the consequences of my sin.
I have felt lonely.
I have battled the depression of hopelessness.
Yet, none of these things have stuck.
None of these things have broken me.
None of these things have caused me to give up.
None of these things define me.
Through God’s grace, mercy, forgiveness, and redeeming love, my heart has been shielded from being hardened to God by this fallen and broken world or humanity’s sin.
God has shielded me from bitterness.
God has shielded me from callousness.
God has shielded me from apathy.
God has shielded me from being crippled by fear.
With God as my shield, I can move through this world as an ambassador of Christ, joyfully making Jesus known to others, even though I face hardships, temptations, and foes.
And so can you!
In what ways has God been a shield to you?
One thought on ““I Am Your Shield””
