Author Paul David Tripp uses the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 to illustrate what prayer is…
Prayer is surrendering to Someone more ultimate than you.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…(v. 9)
Prayer is surrendering to a plan bigger and better than yours.
…your kingdom come…(v. 10a)
Prayer is surrendering your right to live as you want.
…your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (v. 10b).
Prayer is surrendering your hope in life to God’s grace.
Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one (vv. 11-13).
The Lord’s Prayer ends with “give us,” “forgive us,” “lead us,” and “deliver us;” our only hope for all of these things is the generous, empowering grace of God.
Prayer is surrender.
