An Experienced Leader.

With over 30 years experience on the frontlines of leadership, I’ve been where you are and I know the challenges of leading people and systems. • Happy 21st, Hope!

Today, my daughter turns 21. She is beautiful inside and out with an amazing ability to make everyone around her better. She has a great laugh that is captured in this photo… Interestingly, her name was going to be Kate, after my grandmother. But the circumstances of how she came into our lives dictated that…

  • Status or Service?

In the coaching I do with leaders, a useful tool is the SCARF model that was developed by neuroscientist David Rock in 2008. The SCARF model is intended to promote the building of trust and collaboration by helping people understand how they respond to threats and rewards. This model pays particular attention to these five…

  • “They Say and Don’t Do”

I’m really enjoying reading through Scot McKnight’s translation of the New Testament. The choice of wording has consistently sparked my imagination and helped me to “see” certain aspects of familiar stories in fresh ways. One example comes from Matthew 23: 3. In that verse, Jesus points to the Jewish scribes and Pharisees and tells his…

  • The Second Mountain

On a recent trip to Alaska, my daughter took the following picture… …and it reminded me of David Brooks’ book The Second Mountain: The Quest for a Moral Life. In the book, Brooks speaks of two “mountains.” The first mountain is success, as our society typically defines it, and the second mountain is significance. Brooks…

  • The Importance of Love in the Church

Author Sam Allberry recently wrote a powerful article on Jesus’ words from John 13:34-35: “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for…
